So, yesterday afternoon, I get a phone call from a charity. They need a photographer for an event. Let me explain - I've sworn off event photography. Sworn off of it years ago. I don't like it at all.... hmm. This becomes an opportunity. I agree to shoot this charity event, which was tonight at a theater in Tucson. I show up and ask to talk to the lighting person -- there ain't one. huh?!?!? Dance, drummers, slam poetry, comedy improv -- and no lights?!?!
The flat ISO1600 lighting doesn't work - so I discussed with the charity directors and we decided the images are valuable to them and that strobing during the production was going to be worth it. I set up a pair of strobes behind the mid-stage curtains and cross-light the event, careful to make sure nothing shines directly at the audience. It's a small enough production that I don't feel like a total jerk popping strobes, but know that I really shouldn't be in a theater -- so I do it in moderation, mixing with ambient shots. Shooting across-stage, I often unplugged the near strobe and shot with rim only....
